What to See...

I figure I would rely on stereotypes here....

Im spending a week in New york in October. I'm already seeing Mary Poppins, as I have loved the movie since I was a kid. Now my mate is meeting me and my other mate in NY and spending the rest of the trip with us.

He really wants to catch something on broadway while he's there, to say he's done it. Honestly If i was on my own i would proberly catch something every night of the week, I do love a musical. He would like to see a classic, so we might catch Phantom, which he has seen already years ago in Melbourne.

So I'm looking at what will be on and cannot decide on what to go see. So does anyone have any experience with any of the following musicals-

This was just in Melbourne, and i wasn't sure about it. I have never sat through the whole movie. But Elton John is a genius with musicals.. Just look at The Lion King

I have never seen Phantom, but Josh has. Does the NY version have the updated chandelier scene that i know Vegas has?

This is on in Melbourne at the moment, would be cheaper in NY, don't know much about it through

Wicked is Just wrapping up Melbourne and i saw it twice last year, but it is brilliant. Not sure if i can convince Josh to see it.

Chicago is just starting in Melbourne but would be better on the great white way i think. I love the movie, never seen the musical.

Ragtime, i have never heard of. It sounds like a revival and i know my mate was looking to see a classic.

Hair i know nothing about except one act ends in mass nudity :-p

West Side Story. Always been intrigued by. Never seen though, any good?

In The Heights. I know this one a tony award in the last few years. Know nothing beyond that.

South Pacific. Classic broadway i know, but i'm not too sure about it.

I know there are a few more show on Like Avenue Q, Lion King, Little Mermaid, Shrek. However i've either seen them or not interested. (I Really can't get my head around Shrek as a musical)

Even any plays out at the moment worth seeing? We were hoping "Mormon Musical" By the creators of South Park would be on but alas, no such luck

So anyone got any suggestions?

Billy Eliot: It's the hot ticket right now. The kid stars are incredible. The music is great. everyone cries.

Phantom of the Opera: It doesn't have the Vegas chandelier scene, but it is the full show (as opposed to the 40 min version in Vegas). It is as Broadway-esque as possible. Almost 30 consecutive years almost on Broadway.

Jersey Boys: It's A Juke Box musical, so its packed with classic U.S. Pop songs. Best Juke Box Musical, but still on the bottom of my list of plays to pay to see.

Wicked: If you've seen it twice... nothing has changed. I'd spend your time seeing other shows.

Chicago: The play on Broadway isn't really like the movie. So it's hard to give you advice on it. It's sort of a Musical for musical people. It's been on Broadway for a long time and done well. However there are lots who see it and hate it in the theater.

Ragtime: It is a revival but not a classic by any means. It is my BF's favorite musical of all time. It has a great plot and amazing musical score. It's good without being "campy". This doesn't open for even PRE-Views till the last week of OCT. You should have trouble getting into pre-views if you happen to be there that week though.

Hair: True to it's '70 roots. You should be high before you see it. Most people who see it, are still confused about the story when they walk out. It's pretty low on my list of plays to see.

West Side Story: One play that should only be done on Broadway. No one else should touch it. They always ruin it. THIS is a good classic to go see.

In The Heights: GO GO GO. Don't expect it to be the next "Music Man", but it is phenomenal.

South Pacific: This is the MOST classic that you have listed. It's a good story line, and this is a GREAT revival version to see. If you are going, get your tickets now. They sell out MONTHS in advance.

I would HIGHLY recommend you checking out Next To Normal. I haven't seen it yet, but will be making a trip SOON to see it.

Wow Austin Thanks for the thoughts on them all, I knew i'd be able to get
some answers here!

I'm thinking will proberly see West Side Story for sure, it is one i have
wanted to see for a while, and I might try to catch a cheap ticket for In the
heights from the TKTS booth one day.

I was looking at Next to Normal too, I saw the performance at the tony's and
thought the story was quite intriguing for a musical. I might be on my own
to see it though (Might try for another same day with this from TKTS). I'm
the only musical fan out of the three of us. I'm actually surprised Josh wants
to see a musical at all, seeings his the only straight one out of the three
of us :-p

Thanks again mate!

Keep tabs on this page

This is another great options and often even cheaper than TKTS.

Also, what is that picture in your header from? It's gorgeous!

Thanks Todd! Added to the bookmarks, This may help me squeeze in as many shows as possible :-D

The Picture is from Tokyo Disney Sea. I took it when i was there in may. It's of their nighttime show BraviSEAmo! Amazing show bigger than any show i have seen at a disney park, with a beautiful soundtrack. Its a show about the water goddess and god of fire meeting and falling in love.

Heres some youtube action of it-
